Vegan snacks: 15 treats that are free from milk, egg and other animal products

Being vegan – that’s eating a plant-based diet, so no meat, fish, eggs or dairy – is pretty popular right now. With the likes of Deliciously Ella topping the cookbook charts it’s easy to believe that being vegan means being super healthy all the time. But if you fancy the occasional processed treat, fear not. We’ve compiled a list of 15 foods that just happen to be vegan. They weren’t made with the intention of feeding vegans – they just happen to be that way. And some of them might surprise you.

 

1. Turkish delight

Turkish delight is almost always vegan. If you fancy making your own try this recipe.

2. Fry’s Chocolate Cream

My Grandad’s favourite chocolate is vegan. Bet he never knew.

4. Jelly Tots

No animal products in these chewy sweets from Rowntree’s.

Although homemade pastry is almost always made with butter, shop bought tends to use oil instead.

Check the ingredients but chances are shop bought puff, shortcrust or filo pastry is vegan.

6. Bird’s Custard Powder

No egg or milk in this version. You can make it up with soya milk.

7. Crumpets

Many crumpets are vegan – for example Warburtons, Sainsbury’s own and Tesco’s own. Check the label, though, as some contain butter and milk.

8. Waitrose ham hock and English mustard crisps

Contains no ham at all and is completely vegan.

9. Sainsbury’s jelly

No gelatine in Sainsbury’s own brand raspberry or mandarin jelly.

10. Jacob’s cream crackers

No cream in these.

11. Polos

The mint sweets are free from animal products.

12. Mr Kipling jam tarts

Most shop bought cakes contain egg and dairy but not these tasty tarts from Mr Kipling.

13. Aldi bacon rasher crisps

No bacon, and vegan friendly.

14. M&S fizzy cola bottles

According to their vegan list M&S do quite a few vegan sweets, including cola bottles and rhubarb and custards.

And Coca-Cola’s vegan too.

Completely vegan.
