Biblical ‘Daniel Diet’ is a healthy vegan diet in disguise, and it works

Huffington Post ran a piece on the ‘Daniel Diet,’ a 21-day health plan derived from Chapter 10 of the Book of Daniel. Those following Prophet Daniel adhere to a scheduled, religiously motivated “fasting” period in which fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils are on the menu. Sound familiar?

Often referred to as the “pulse diet,” it’s emphasis is on eating legumes. Caffeine, alcohol, additives, and preservatives are off limits too, meaning some of the great vegan cheeses of our time wouldn’t apply. Of course, the emphasis was on having healthy prophets, not sparing animals.

So why are we talking about an ancient diet that reminds us of a vegan one? Well, researchers from the University of Memphis studied 43 subjects who tried Daniel’s way, and found positive results. They found that cholesterol fell from an average of 171 mg/dl to 139 mg/dl, LDL cholesterol from 98 to 76 mg/dl and systolic blood pressure from 115 mmHg to 106 mmHg. Inflammation also fell from 3.1 to 1.6 mg/L, and calories dropped from 2,185 daily to 1,722. They also found the diet to be a great source of natural vitamins and antioxidants, with no supplementation required. A miracle? No…just the power of plant-based food.

So for those who have faith, call it what you want, but eating healthy vegan food can help you feel absolutely divine (as can the unhealthy vegan treats). Add ending all animal use to the recipe, and you’ll be feeling like a saint in no time.
